My H-E-B

Context

This was originally a two-month contract that ended up turning into a nine-month contract job. I was brought in to help improve the user experience for both the IOS and Android apps.

  • Goals

The main goal was to help improve the overall user experience of both the IOS and Android apps.

  • My Role - UX/UI - QA

I was a hybrid between UX/UI and Design QA.

  • Tools

Sketch | Zeplin | Test Phones | Jira | Invision

So many bugs…

When I was brought in the app had a lot of visual and functional bugs. There were also a lot of gaps in the user flow that made for a bad user experience. H-E-B did not have a system on the design side for doing Design QA, so another contractor and I came up with the system on how we were going to do this part of the job. On the UX side, I was tasked to go through the user flow and find any gaps in the experience and collaborate with other designers to come with solutions to fill in those gaps.

Visual Bugs

My Design QA process involved grabbing the design screens from Zeplin and taking screenshots from Android and Apple phones. I would then compare them in Sketch side by side and make annotations of the differences. Next I would create a ticket in Jira and work with the devs or designers to fix all the issues I found on a per ticket basis.

Functional Bugs

Another part of my job was searching for any functional bugs like the example below where the images are flickering when you tap on the tip options. I would record the behavior and upload a ticket with that recording in Jira as well.

Summary

Working at H-E-B was a really great experience and the work that I did there gave me a lot of insights into the value that Design QA brings to the whole UX process. I was also able to gain a ton of experience working with developers on a daily basis.
